Royal Botanic Gardens

This venue in the heart of Melbourne, easily accessible by train, tram and foot is a fabulous resource to provide rich observational experiences and hands on activity for units of work bases on water, sustainability, natural disasters, environment, life cycles, indigenous life and Melbourne history.

The following site provides tips for planning and downloadable resources for use in the classroom and onsite. Ideas for collaboration and school partnerships across a range of subjects, including second languages, Maths, Science, Literature and more.

In October, you can view the beautiful swans and their cygnets and volunteer guides can be accessed to take a group of students on a bird watching tour. The Aboriginal Heritage Walk shows the land through the eyes of traditional owners. Spot bellbirds, black swans, eels, cockatoos, kookaburras and other wildlife.

Guilfoyles Volcano

This area of the Royal Botanic gardens was originally built in 1876 as a way of storing water. Its current refurbish and design represent an actual volcanic eruption and it is an example of using water wisely with both storage areas and sustainable plants. Boardwalks and viewing platforms give a real sense of the parameters of this wonderful resource.

Play and Learn .......

This is an amazing garden to explore with a variety of garden environments to interact with a wetland area, a bamboo forest, plant tunnel, kitchen garden and ‘The Rill’ a gentle waterway.

Visit the website for guidelines and information related to OHS. It is an area that caters for a variety of age groups and is accessible to those with disabilities.

‘The garden has been designed to intrigue, teach and excite children from a very young age about the importance of conservation and the environment. It is scaled specifically for children to create a sense of ownership, care and responsibility for the environment.’
